Marian Read

The book I'm reading currently
I belong to a book club and our next book is The Thread by Victoria Hislop, so I'll be reading that. I've been reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel for ages. I love that era but I find her really difficult to read. I skip read a lot but with this book I have to read every single word and I have to keep referring back because she doesn't always mention who she's talking about, it's not easy. I love Bridge so I'm also reading Bridge books a lot.

A book that had a big impact on me
Not without my daughter by Betty Mahmoody. It impressed me hugely, a great eye-opener about conditions in Iran. I realised what a lucky woman I am living in this country; we just take our rights for granted. It is a true story about an American woman who is tricked by her husband to go to Iran with their daughter and they become prisoners there.

My desert island reading
I'd probably go for history books. I like fiction books that use genuine history as a background.

My choice of lifetime magazine subscription
I love my art magazines, probably an art magazine.

My must-see film
I enjoyed the Judi Dench one, The Second-best Exotic Marigold Hotel where she's living in an old-people's hotel, that was interesting.

My guilty-pleasure telly
NCIS, I love it! And what I love is, not so much the plot, but the people; the way they talk to each other, it's like having friends in my house. I feel guilty but I love it!

My radio turn-on and turn-off
If I'm in the car I like to listen to the news. If I'm at home I have classical music. Jazz as well, I like listening to jazz. I don't like listening to pop music, screechy shouty, I used to when I was younger, but I don't now. And if there is Latin American music, which I adore, I can't sit still, I get up and dance.

My favourite work of art
There's one picture I've always loved, it's a religious picture of Christ and a lantern and the caption says 'I am the light, I am the way'. They have that picture in my local church in Gastard.

I love abstract art, I appreciate it but I'm not very good at doing it. I love Monet's Water Lilies.

The weekend paper I am most likely to pick up
The Telegraph.

The section of the weekend paper I read first
I always like to read the general news and then I do the crossword. I like reading stories about people, the gossip.

A piece of music that makes me smile
I love Chopin, I play Chopin, and Mozart's Sonata no. 6 is my favourite sonata but I wouldn't say they made me smile. I love a piece of show music, Sit Down you're Rocking the Boat from Guys and Dolls, I adore that piece of music because it makes me happy.

A piece of music that makes me cry
Music that makes me cry is from Madame Butterfly.
